Pretty much the Democrat MO. \"Are you going to stop killing brown & poor
people overseas?\"

\"No, but we\'re going to make sure it\'s a diverse team of races,
sexualities, and gender identities that compiles the target lists.\"

They\'re not talking about THE Space Force, they\'re talking about employment in the space industry and mostly civilian jobs. The most laughable aspect of the story is about recruiting candidates from a category of colleges that can\'t even break 5% graduation rate in many cases. The announcement just signals another massive waste of money down the toilet. It\'s about buying votes for their corrupt party.

$35K? A decent plumber or electrician can make 3 times that.

Not in the hellhole areas the government is going to force the industry into setting up manufacturing plants... strings attached to get big government contracts.

I\'ve had excellent experiences with electricians and plumbers. I like

I recently explained sacrificial anodes to a plumber. He replaced our
water heater in the cabin but had never heard of cathodic protection.

He might have been likeable, but he hadn\'t been well-trained. But then again neither has John Larkin.
Of course the plumber might not have wanted to explain cathodic protection to John Larkin - John can be very complacent about what he thinks he knows, and rather resistant to the idea that he ought to know more.

I acquired a new water heater recently, to replace the one that failed
after almost 40 years of service. Sacrificial anodes, a simple reliable
passive solution for corrosion protection, are now declared obsolete.
My new water heater is equipped with a rechargeable battery and some
electronics to that end. I expect that to fail in two or three years.

Progress.

We have electric battery-powered shades in our conference room, with
impossibly complex remotes. I was opposed. It\'s all failed now of
course. The ones in my office have manual pull chains and work fine.

My new water heater at home has the Honeywell FrankenThermostat. There
are youtube videos about how to manage that.

The cost of each moon flight is now over 4 billion, about 8x the
original budget. But it ain\'t done yet. NASA and Boeing should be able
to manage it up to $10e9 per trip.

Figure around $10 million per bootprint in the moon dust. Maybe a few
dead astronauts too, that NASA can get sentimental about.

It\'s all politics and job creation
Long ago NASA\'s real engineers even had a tested design for a nuclear rocket

Was scrapped and the real engineers left or retired.

Microprocessors are cheap and evil.

Microprocessors are cheap for what you get. They are nowhere near computationally powerful enough to be evil, though some people use them in ways that are unfortunate. They are tools - like guns. As the NRA says, guns don\'t kill people, people kill people.

They are powerful enough to let you put together an over-complicated and ill-thought-out design and still get it to work, but that doesn\'t make them evil - just powerful enough that we shouldn\'t let them get into the wrong hands. Licensed system designers might end being required to wear white hats.
